All Business Owners Must Do This to Succeed

imposter syndrome mindset Nov 21, 2019

What do you define success as?

Michelle Obama says that success is, "Success is not about how much money you make; it's about the difference you make in peoples' lives."

But your definition of success might be completely different from her's or mine.

You could go after a specific income goal.

Maybe you want to change your lifestyle to escape the 9-5.

It could be the security of going to bed every night knowing that if you did decide to make a transition in your life, you have a nice nest egg to give you breathing room.

Whether you want to see a stacked bank account, travel the world, or stop comparing prices when you're grocery shopping, there is one thing every successful person needs to do.

(This isn't industry, stage of business, or experience specific, either!)

You must SHOW UP in places outside of your comfort zone.

It's easy to look at the Instagram highlights of your favorite influencers and think, "Well it's so simple for her. She does this all day. She has so much experience. I bet she doesn't even break a sweat."

Remember, every "expert" or "authority" person that you see started somewhere.

They needed to get through their first:

  • Webinar
  • Summit
  • Live in-person speech or presentation
  • Rejection
  • Discovery call
  • Course or product
  • Client signing
  • And more!

That means when you see that Facebook post saying that there's an upcoming summit or a podcast is asking for more guest speakers, you raise your hand.

You shut down that voice in your head saying, "Nah, you're not good enough," and say, "I'm going after it anyway."

You need to show up for things that you might feel like you're not an obvious choice for.

They don't call it growing pains for nothing, right?

For me, this realization hit me like a ton of bricks when I was writing the first draft of my Spark Portland 2019 speech.

I found that the ongoing decision of showing up and doing it anyway shaped the journey of my career.

  • It landed me a spot on a reality tv show while I was in high school.
  • It empowered me to successfully appeal a rejection to my dream school and turn it into an admissions offer.
  • It led me to land my first full-time job by pitching a role that didn’t exist at a company I discovered on Instagram.

It’s resulted in an invitation to guest lecture at my alma mater this fall in front of a class full of business graduate students (I don’t have a business degree or MBA 🤷🏻‍♀️)

And perhaps most importantly, it pushed me to start and bootstrap my own business. You wouldn't be reading this blog or listening to my podcast if I decided to wait until I felt ready.

The truth is, even now, despite the success I've been seeing, I still feel outside of my comfort zone.
